On November 18, 1958, an article entitled 'CHARLES A. MONTANA, MAGADDINO Before Federal Grand Jury' appeared in the Buffalo Evening News, Buffalo, New York. The article stated that the subject and his son-in-law, CHARLES A. MONTANA, were served subpoenas to appear before the Federal Grand Jury in New York City on November 18, 1958. The United States Attorney's Office declined to comment on the nature of the investigation or confirm a report that the Federal Narcotics Bureau had served the subpoenas.
On November 11, 1958, [REDACTED], New York State Police, Lewiston, advised that at approximately 9:30 PM on November 9 a complaint reached the Lewiston NYSP substation that someone had thrown a hand grenade through the window of the subject's home. [REDACTED] stated the call had been answered by MICHAEL AUER, a neighbor. An Army-type fragmentation grenade had been thrown through a window; the explosive charge had been removed, making it harmless. The report suggested the grenade might have been used for military training at a Western New York installation.
[REDACTED] stated that MAGADDINO appeared frightened and shaken after the incident. The identity of the person responsible was not established. The informant suggested it was apparently a prank rather than a gangland threat and speculated a Niagara University student might have been involved in a fraternity initiation. [This was speculation, not a finding.]
On November 4, 1958, [REDACTED] in Niagara Falls said he had known the subject by reputation for years but could provide no information regarding his activities.
The report introduces a list of previously contacted Niagara Falls informants continued on following pages.
